No. Here are the various methods employed in the marketplace and some of their shortcomings, also summarized in our Indoor Air Disinfection Comparison Matrix.

  • Central Heating/Cooling Systems (HVAC)
    • HVAC systems have wall or ceiling intakes, which do not eliminate airborne pathogens in rooms.
      • Wall intakes mean untreated air remains in the breathing zone longer.
      • Ceiling intakes have insufficient aerodynamic range and do not effectively disinfect the breathing zone.
    • HVAC systems often create hot and cold pockets in offices and rooms, where air remains stagnant – these areas can be hotbeds for infectious air.
    • HVAC systems may add ionization, chemicals, radio-frequency waves, ozone, HEPA filters, activated carbon, and UVC lights, but for the reasons mentioned above, even with these extra measures, there are no studies that prove HVAC systems to be effective in preventing person-to-person transmission.
  • Portable Air Purifiers
    • Portable devices are designed for local air purification, which do not eliminate airborne pathogens in rooms.
      • Portable designs have insufficient flow to effectively treat breathing zone air, and are ineffective when people move around.
      • Unidirectional, low air flow doesn’t effectively clear the breathing zone.
    • Portable devices may use ionization, chemicals, radio-frequency waves, ozone, HEPA filters, activated carbon, and UVC lights, but for the reasons mentioned above, even with these extra measures, there are no studies that prove portable air purifiers to be effective in preventing person-to-person transmission.
  • Ceiling-Based Systems
    • Ceiling-based systems, such as troffers, ceiling fans, and other upper air disinfection units are used to disinfect upper room air, but only the halō beats the CDC’s published 15-minute guideline and effectively prevents airborne pathogens in rooms.
      • Standard ceiling fans blow air downward, which mixes treated and untreated air in the breathing zone of a room.
      • Even ceiling fans equipped with UVC lights or LEDs have insufficient exposure times to effectively kill pathogens.
      • Other upper air units have low or no active air flow and don’t effectively clear the breathing zone.
    • Ceiling-based systems may use fans with added disinfection methods, but for the reasons mentioned above, only the halō effectively prevents person-to-person transmission.

Yes! Low-UVC technology has been used for decades to kill pathogens, including all previous coronaviruses. In June 2020, our Principal Investigator, Dr. Anthony Griffiths at the Boston University Medical School, was the first researcher worldwide to report results of Covid-19 virion inactivation with UVC. With LUV Systems Low-UVC technology and the halō light fixture, Dr. Griffiths’ lab has now demonstrated a Covid-19 virion kill effectiveness well over 99.9%.

Since Dr. Griffiths’ original study, additional global researchers have published results backing up and proving the effectiveness of low-UVC to kill the Covid-19 virus. We continue to work with Dr. Griffiths on advanced Covid-19 inactivation research, including his recent testing of the halō light fixtures to prove our 99.9% Covid-19 virion kill within seconds.

In addition, we have conducted extensive independent aerodynamic tests to optimize the halō’s unique upflow technology to provide a maximum “cone of influence,” with a fan that gently draws air in the breathing zone up and away from people and directs it through our proven low-UVC light ring, and returns clean air back into the room.

Independent third-party testing of the halō has verified that ambient UVC levels are far below all federal and state environmental and occupational standards, with a 10X safety margin. the halō uses low-UVC light to safely and effectively kill the Covid-19 virus and germs in the air. the halō uses a ceiling fan (in upflow mode) to gently draw 2,000 cubic feet per minute of air up from the room’s breathing zone and direct it into a low-UVC light ring within the cowling surrounding the fan to kill pathogens. 99.9% of the Covid-19 virus passing through the cowling is killed within seconds, and the cleaned air is returned to your room’s breathing zone. With our unique, patent-pending cowling design, we never expose people to the low-UVC light ring.

the halō is designed to continuously disinfect air when people are in your business. Simply turn on the wall switch and the halō motion detector is activated. the halō uses the motion detector to start the system when people are present in your business. It automatically shuts down 10 minutes after everyone leaves an area. The wall switch can be used to manually turn off the halō at any time.

Your purchase of the halō includes a display certificate to inform customers that your establishment’s indoor air is protected by the halō. The certificate will have a validity of 12 months, and LUV Systems will renew certificates upon receipt of your documentation verifying inspection or maintenance.

Operationally, the spinning fan and an indicator light provide visual confirmation that the halō is functioning. In a dark room, your customers may see a faint blue-green corona around the halō.

Yes. In addition to regular maintenance such as inspection and dusting, we recommend proactive bulb replacement to ensure continuous protection from the halo. The average bulb life is 9000 hours and may vary based on cycling and your specific use conditions.

Our LUV Systems-certified contractors offer an inexpensive and convenient maintenance program to provide all recommended servicing for a flat monthly fee. Our future Shop page will provide a list of LUV Systems-certified contractors serving Los Angeles and Orange counties.

the halō draws 600 W from a standard 15 A breaker – around $50/month (assuming 16 hours/day, 6 days/week, $0.20/kWh). Recommended maintenance for the halō includes regular inspection, and scheduled bulb replacement. We estimate the annual cost of maintenance by a qualified technician is approximately $800, inclusive of labor, bulb replacement, and inspection.

Yes! With proper use and maintenance, the halō is covered by a 12-month limited warranty. The warranty includes all non-consumable components, including electronics, mechanical parts, and structural components. Bulbs are excluded from the warranty, as we recommend changing bulbs proactively on a schedule rather than waiting until they burn out. Our warranty is provided here.
